My other favourite Lovecraft horror story, which like a lot of his best work has much of the horror happening out of view of the viewpoint characters or in brief glimpses, being tantalizingly hinted at. It builds up very slowly with the history of the eponymous protagonist's nefarious ancestor, then gradually portrays his descent into the occult before finally revealing the reality of the supernatural forces hinted at up to that point.

Historical survival/supernatural horror based on the real-life disappearance of the Franklin expedition to the Arctic in the mid-19th century. It creates a brilliantly oppressive atmosphere from the Arctic landscape and weather, the starvation and paranoia experienced by the trapped explorers, and the giant supernatural polar bear picking them off one by one.
