It builds up very slowly with the history of the eponymous protagonist's nefarious ancestor, then gradually portrays his descent into the occult before finally revealing the reality of the supernatural forces hinted at up to that point. It creates a brilliantly oppressive atmosphere from the Arctic landscape and weather, the starvation and paranoia experienced by the trapped explorers, and the giant supernatural polar bear picking them off one by one.
