I can't really point to one inspiration for my books. There were so many things that gave me little ideas, all maturing into his work. Early Shannara books by Terry Brooks. David Farland's Runelords. CS Friedman's Coldfire trilogy. A Song of Ice and Fire. X-Men comics. The Matrix trilogy. I could go on forever.

Mr. Brett, I was curious about one thing. Arlen gave the battle wards to Tibbet's Creek and considered his work done. Wouldn't giving the town knowledge on how to make crete be more helpful? The first book starts with wards failing in the hamlet and in the 2nd book we see how using crete made the whole town warded not to mention what Leesha did with it at her house.
