My book club is reading A gentleman in Moscow and I'm finding it horribly slow without much plot. Does it get better? I'm at the end of Book One.

David Bryant I feel sorry for those who did not enjoy the book and consider it slow. I think they are missing the pleasure of it! It (almost) perfectly illustrates the idea that a journey is not about the destination so much as the pleasure of travel. Likewise, this book is about the pleasure of the story and how it is crafted and told. It matches the concept of a "gentleman" and that his purpose is not to "do" but to "be."
Ryan I thought it was very slow at first, but I really liked it. It is not very plot driven until the very, very end. It's more a character study and an atmospheric story about the life of the Count in the hotel.
Rebecca Too wordy. Lots of Russian history and descriptions for first 200 pages. Really drags. Then it gets to more action and the remainder is good. Just sludging through those first couple hundred pages. Aye yi yi !
Judy The book does get better as it goes on. So many things happen to the Count in later chapters. He's a wiley fellow. Please keep reading, as I'm sure you will be richly rewarded.
Alison I almost gave up less than a hundred pages in, so glad I didn't. It does get better, it is a perfectly lovely book. 5 stars for me....
I see you posted this 24 days ago so hopefully you did finish it and loved it?
Alicja I have found it slow as well when I was reading it and there were some time skips which did make me think I must have missed something, but towards the end of the book it does pick up and once you're 'over the hump' as I like to call it it does get better.
