It's ambiguous. It pissed me off. I had to tap into my inner buddha-zen to let go and accept not knowing.

I was consider reading it, but now that I read that the cat may have been killed then I don't think I can read it. It would leave me devastated. I usually read really strong literature, but when it comes to stories involving cats I cannot deal with sad endings. Cats are my weakness.

When this book finally got interesting at the very last minute, the author leaves you hanging.

Glad it wasn't just me... :-)

I agree. What happened to the cat is enigmatic. Perhaps purposefully so. also the future for the couple is undefined as well. perhaps this is a typical style of Japanese writing. The ending certainly leaves one to think and wonder. There are clues, so perhaps readers can envision their own ending for what happened to Chibi.

I believe that the ending of this work is meant to leave us questioning, much like the nature of Chibi was to the couple in the book, a mystery.

I felt the cat was killed because it was seen as disloyal but hope I am WRONG!

Same! I just can’t seem to let it go. It’s haunting my mind.
