I, in fact, read this book in grade seven at the age of twelve. It depends on what he/she enjoys. If they like what you'd expect most seventh-graders to like (fast romances, a light inner conflict, exploration through a new place, comparative humor) then this book is your girl. However, I, myself, who especially fancied a tear-inducing emotional conflict at the time (I was in a state of depression at the time and wished to relate to something), found that Evans Welch did not elaborate enough on Lena's grief for there to be much of a true conflict. But if your child is a light-hearted, neurotypical kid, shoot for it. That had to do completely with my own issues.(less)
