Charlotte asked Caragh M. O'Brien:

Which of your characters from Birthmarked was the hardest to write? Which was your favorite?

Caragh M. O'Brien Gaia’s mother posed some interesting challenges for me. Aside from one major scene, Bonnie rarely appears actively elsewhere in the novel, but she’s a powerful force in Gaia’s life, so I wanted her to be clear as a real person and not just a cardboard, classic mother figure. I realized that each mention of this character had to resonate. Bonnie has a very small, quiet moment in a flashback when she turns over on her bed, and I felt including that moment gave Gaia a glimpse of Bonnie’s interior life, even if she didn’t fully understand it.
As for my favorite character, that’s Gaia, by far. I was fascinated by the way she approached injustice and changed over the course of the book. Thanks for your question, Charlotte.
All best, Caragh
