Did you know when you started to write birthmarked that you writing a book about the rights of the individual verses the rights of the community and that you would use one of the hottest subjects that of birth, birth control, and women rights?

When I started, I knew I wanted to write about a girl whose work was important in life and death situations, so I made Gaia a midwife. It became clear to me very soon that her story involved the rights you mention. Did I deliberately choose topics because they were controversial? No, but I didn’t shy away from them when they came up in my story, as they very naturally did. Thanks for asking.
