E. I began this reading only because my friend liked it well enough to recommend it. My own response about Africans, both in Africa and in diaspora, has been unhappy. This book, however, has elicited a very positive response, though it explores many of the same issues that the others have. The difference seems to be the lyrical and forthright and non-judgmental point of view of the author. I loved it and wait for another book by Yaa Gyasi
Linda Rae This feels like an updated "Roots" by Alex Haley. It is less of a novel than a series of vignettes about the different generations. It is good, but not great.
Karen Caldwell Yes, and I would NOT recommend anyone purchasing it. The novel suffers from a lack of research on the time periods, lifestyles and values of the places it attempts to cover. While I really wanted to Like this novel, but found it more like a first draft rushed to publication than a fully formed generational story spanning several continents and stories. Better luck in your next try Yaa Gyasi.
Linda Yes! I wrote a review on my Goodreads page. It is one of the few books that I have ever rated with 5 stars.
Judy Lindow I just started Homegoing and can't put it down. Great storytelling and a history we don't hear about. I cringe when I think that the slave trading was going on only a little over 200 years ago. It's seems too much for the human heart to endure. For myself, the story of an individual has more impact than a tome of historical, non-fiction.
Harlow Beautifully written. Surprisingly good for a debut novel. Agree with comments: "It is good, but not great." ". . .forthright and non-judgmental point of view of the author."
Susan I loved it! I listened to it on Audible and the narrator was wonderful. When it was over, I just started listening to it from the beginning immediately!
June I just finished it. For historical fiction, I'm thrilled with the portrayal of very hard things in a positive way. We are all victims of the circumstances around us that we are not aware of or unable to change. I'm sorry that slavery ever existed, but I'm not surprised because the "have's" always seem to control the "have not's" in a prideful battle of the fittest. The book did remind me of an updated "Roots", and I had trouble keeping track of the relationships of the people over the generations.
Linda highly recommend!

My Books Portal Finished Homegoing this weekend and was left with so many thoughts. Found myself stopping to shed a tear numerous times as I read the interconnected stories of the lives Yaa Gyasi shared and created from such well-researched histories. I was reminded of how many people had to live life, with all its happiness and ugliness, loss and love, for me to be here, at this place, in this time, in this body. The sacrifices and choices that each of our ancestors made or were forced into living with, are the reason each of us have been granted this gift of life, of experience, and in many cases, the freedom to live and to make choices in a way those who came before us could only dream of. And yes, through all the horrors they - and sometimes we - have had to face, this book reminds us how special and precious the gift of choice in life really is.
