For historical fiction, I'm thrilled with the portrayal of very hard things in a positive way. We are all victims of the circumstances around us that we are not aware of or unable to change. I'm sorry that slavery ever existed, but I'm not surprised because the "have's" always seem to control the "have not's" in a prideful battle of the fittest. The book did remind me of an updated "Roots", and I had trouble keeping track of the relationships of the people over the generations. (less)
