What methods do you use when creating a character? Do you flesh them out before you start writing a novel, or just sorta figure them out as you go along? Also, how do you make them seem so real?

Mark Lawrence Hi SummerBlue - I don't really have any methods ... for Jorg and Jalan I had an idea of the sort of characters they were from their inspiration in earlier books (Alex from A Clockwork Orange, 1962, for Jorg & Harry Flashman from Flashman, 1969, for Jalan). The more detailed feel of them came as I wrote. Everyone else in the books just appeared under my fingers as I typed and grew along with the story.

Were you worried about making the MC Jorg so very young? He commits all these atrocities so why make him 13? Do you find it takes away from the credibility - the 'believabiltiy' if you will, of the plot? Or was it done in order for a younger audience to be able to relate to him?
