David asked Mark Lawrence:

There's a popular saying that you must write and throw away a million words before you're able to write at a professional level of quality. How true was this for you?

Mark Lawrence Probably true. I wrote lots of scenarios for Dungeons & Dragons when I was in school. In my 20s/30s I wrote a LOT of replies for the play-by-mail game I ran (Saturnalia) - and that was an interactive fantasy story. In my 30s/40s I wrote a lot of short stories and two books before I wrote Prince of Thorns.

I guess there's 1,000,000+ words in that lot.
