Sophie Titcomb Not at all. There were so many little references where I thought pleeaaase let this be a thing - and I was pretty much cheering on the bus when it actually happened. I thought there were references in Thaniel's character too (he'd never thought of himself as getting married, and Annabel seemed to hint at it when she asked whether there wasn't someone else). Thought it was very beautifully built up and so satisfying.

Deb I totally agree. I actually gasped when I read it and then re=read it! No preparation at all for the relationship.

Louise McMillan I got hints of it from very early on, and I thought that relationship was very well built up, with lots of delicate moments that all fitted together. But I thought that Grace was short-changed as a result, her happy ending felt way too contrived and convenient for the plot and I thought she deserved better than an ending just for the convenience of Thaniel and Mori.

Melanie I also had to re-read that part a couple of times to make sure I had read it right and wasn't misunderstanding or something.
E2c Nope. But I think it could have been written as <spoiler>a friendship </spoiler> and worked equally well. That the marriage is <spoiler>one of convenience rather than love </spoiler> was clear; ditto for Grace's attraction to Matsumoto. Mori's <spoiler>jealousy and animosity toward Grace </spoiler> were, i think, a pretty obvious giveaway.
