I wasn't caught off guard, per se, but as someone who watches all these recent Sherlock Holmes re-boots and half-heartedly fantasizes about how interesting it would be if Holmes and Watson were more than just friends, I think I was pleased. I definitely think Pulley communicated that Mori was interested in Thaniel [in that way] from the very outset. Little did I realize he already knew who Thaniel was. I kind of figured it would just be kept as something unrequited or unacknowledged. But I thought she did a very good job in letting the reader in on it, in an appropriately Victorian way. A slow burn definitely, but the hints were there. So yeah, that kiss (and whatever followed after) was a relief almost. Hopefully, it didn't upset you. I thought it was sweet and rather romantically handled. I'm looking forward to the next installment.
