My 11-year-old daughter wants to read this. I don't mind her reading many young adult books, including ones with romance, but I'm not keen on her reading ones where the love scenes are quite explicit (as far as Young Adult goes). She's read The Hunger Games, the Matched series, and If I Stay with my approval, just to give an idea of what I'm okay with. Any thoughts about this one?

Nothing objectionable even for savvy 11 year olds. It's pretty cheesy but enjoyable and the teen romance element is really underplayed. However, it is going with idea of death and the siren mythology of sending humans to their deaths. That is something you might want to consider when allowing her to read it.

I read this yesterday. They only share a kiss. I think it would be okay for an 11 year old.
Ava
I would let her read it I am twelve and it's one of my favorite books. There isn't much romance (only a kiss). However, there is a lot of death so, if she's fine with that I would let her read it.

Its fine for an 11 year old, but I'd have her wait to read it because you're able to understand how beautiful the story really is if you're a bit older. :)

Any love scenes in this book are very tame. Kahlen and Akinli's romance is very innocent, your 11-year-old will love this
Addison Dixon
This is TAME explicitly-wise compared to If I Stay. AND The Hunger Games (violence-wise).

I personally think this is fine for an 11 year old. The girl does fall in love, but there's no inappropriate romance. Some parts of the book are kind of hard for a kid (Thousands of people dying in shipwrecks, etc.) so it could be a good idea to read it first to make sure you're comfortable with her reading it. It's long-ish, but fast-paced so you can read it quickly.

I don't think it would be that bad nothing to intense. It mostly refers to a little mythology and has some interesting life lessons.

It's fine! It's much more tame than If I Stay, or even Matched and the Hunger Games

I would say that your daughter can read this one. There's nothing super scandalous (at least, there's not a full description of what they "do") I don't even remember a love scene in this book. They do allude to things, but do not straight up say it. I don't even remember if there was much swearing.

How do you approve which books are appropriate for her?Do you read it or ask other people or something else?(it is not a sarcastic question,I am just curious)
Shirley
There aren't many love scenes, if she is really excited to read it, then let her read it, if she gets in the book and you think its bad for her, then just don't let her read it.

I would DEFINITELY recommend this to your daughter I am a similar age and LOVED it!

This is perfectly fine for an eleven year old. Some people say that it's too violent but I disagree! People think eleven year olds are to young to read anything except little kid books! They are wrong! So Gerard Villegas as you commented below that you might not want eleven year olds to read it because of death you are so wrong! Okay? Eleven is not that young!

This is a mild Hunger Games. Better, more beautiful. Raw book. 11 year old...maybe but I do agree with all the other comments below though

There's no hectic relationships but there's a lot of death in the book

To be honest i think you should allow her to read whatever she wants...she's 11..what 11 year old in this generation reads that much anyways? since i was in middle school, my parents didn't care what i read..they just couldn't get my face outta books so they just lived with it.. Your daughter would appreciate if you let her read what she wants.

I am 12 and found it was surprisingly appropriate. It was a great read and I found it was a great book.
