Is this a good book for a person that had a series of leg injuries and is looking to get back into running?

Juli Hoffman This is as much a memoir as it is a story about running. I am not a runner and yet I enjoyed it very much. I would recommend reading this for what it is, however if you are looking for a step-by-step how to guide, this may not be the book you're looking for. It doesn't go into detailed how to methods. It does tell the amazing stories of some fascinating ultra marathon runners. I'd say this book is more inspirational than instructional.

For motivation and to get you eager to run, yes. For advice, definitely not.

This book is littered with hyperbole, inaccuracies and contradiction. It goes from saying that the Tarahumara consumes almost no protein to saying that they consume more protein than most americans. It speaks about Lance Armstrong barely shuffling through his first marathon which was actually a sub 3hr. There are dozens of more examples.

Definitely read this but do lots of research along the way if you are planning on using it as advice.
Allen Baumgardner-Zuzik If you are looking to get back into running, then yes, this book is for you. I agree with a previous comment that Born to Run will not give you a step-by-step guide on HOW to run. However, the book will is filled with history and accounts of modern pioneers who have eschewed modern running conventions in the search of the basic question: "Why do we love to run and why are we so bad at it." The accounts range from scientific, to spiritual, and come back with the conclusions that we are actually quite good at running, it is just that we, as a modern society, have forgotten how.

As a long-distance runner myself, I find this book incredibly inspiring. McDougall is a proficient writer who can take even the most boring topic and make it interesting. Even if this book isn't exactly what you are looking for, it is still a worthy consideration.
Vassilis Absolutely but always consult with your doctor and try new techniques gradually otherwise more pain and injuries will occur.
B Absolutely. Whether you are ultimately able to run again or not, McDougall brilliantly captures the simple ecstasy that is distance running...

Even if we can only look back upon our injury-free youth, the book is a celebration of that experience--being able to roll out of bed, throw on a pair of shoes, and burst out the door into ebullience.

I can only echo the others below: Born to Run is a love letter to running, wrapped in a fantastic, journalistic narrative. Inspirational?
Absolutely. Instructional? God no.
Daniel Fisher Yes! But if you are closed minded and prefer traditional mainstream advice this book is NOT for you!
Fred Gradually for me means more than a year of walking and feet exercises. I make some progress get excited and overdo it, months of setback
Å Yes, I think so.
