I agree with a previous comment that Born to Run will not give you a step-by-step guide on HOW to run. However, the book will is filled with history and accounts of modern pioneers who have eschewed modern running conventions in the search of the basic question: "Why do we love to run and why are we so bad at it." The accounts range from scientific, to spiritual, and come back with the conclusions that we are actually quite good at running, it is just that we, as a modern society, have forgotten how.

As a long-distance runner myself, I find this book incredibly inspiring. McDougall is a proficient writer who can take even the most boring topic and make it interesting. Even if this book isn't exactly what you are looking for, it is still a worthy consideration.(less)
