First of all, please give a bear hug to your father for reading my books with an open heart. I have met men, specially older men, who admit openly that they don't read the work of women writers. How disrespectful! Imagine how limited women would be if they didn't read men's work. I believe my books have no gender and could interest people of any age, race or gender. The sad truth is that women have to do double the effort of any man to get half the recognition.

In the last 5 years, I've made 3 trips to Chile--I swoon just thinking about that country, and I want to learn as much as possible about it from tip to tip. Do you ever go back? What do you love/hate/miss about it? Do you have any opinions on the Museo de la Memoria? Where can I read your interview with Pablo Neruda? What is one thing that I shouldn't miss on my next trip there?

Island Beneath the Sea felt to me like a very different kind of story than most of your previous books. Please share a little of what spoke to you about Saint-Dominque and that period of its history. What, if anything, surprised you when researching material for the book?
