I haven't started this book yet, but I recently bought it and I'm curious, without using any spoilers, why is this book rated so lowly?

István Because it's not a typical Stephen King-horror story. It's very hard to read and it's very good. People don't want to invest that much energy into a so called "horror" novel. It's well worth reading it. it's challenging but takes you on a journey like no other book.
Jessica Lavender Of all of the Stephen King books I have read, this one is definitely the most different. I suspect that we have come as King readers to expect certain things from his work and this was just different. Not necessarily in a bad way though. What makes the book so haunting is the human mind (and trust me, it is plenty scary). I won't give a spoiler, but I will say that I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. It was at times gruesome, but that is what made the book so compelling. I highly recommend it.
Irwin Fletcher It's a decent short story idea, expanding it into a novella would have been pushing it but he turned it into a full novel. He padded out the length by dragging out a few of his more lazy shock cliches which add very little to the story. It almost feels like a book written on a bet, where he tried to prove he could take a decent little idea and turn it into a bestseller by throwing in a few paint-by-numbers King tricks.
Louise Phillipson It's a compelling read about a woman who refuses to give up. I love it.
Malina This one is no horror story, but a complete waste of time; while reading it one ecounters a lot of loathsome scenes and repulsive ideas. I do not recommend it at all.
Madison Hite Everyone is different and looking for something specific in a book. I find it very hard and confusing to base which book to read on the reviews. You won't be disappointed.
Judyann Melton Um because it sucks? Sorry I love Stephen King but nobody bats hits a home run every time
Jubilee Hi! The pacing is a bit slow for some people. Not much actually happens. I would say 75% of the book is discovering a mystery through flashbacks, and the main girl talking to herself.
David Seller bc nothing really happens and some very disturbing ideas along the way. you end up with nothing but feeling repulsed. its not a king classic

Sketchbook Rated lowly, because it's utter rubbish.
Pam It’s a book that will stay with you. Beyond frightening.
Jerry Balzano I imagine a good number of people are put off by the BDSM elements of the book. An embarrassing number of people with low attention spans (and/or limited imaginations) realize or infer that Jessie is going to be stuck in that bedroom for 300 or so pages and decide that "nothing happens" in the book. GG challenges its readers, and you know how many of us just hate that!
Victor It must be a very disturbing read. I saw the Netflix film which was pretty awesome (and also disturbing.) Can't imagine I wouldn't have enjoyed (being disturbed) reading the book. This particular story gets pretty dark and I'm sure turned a lot of people off and some may be properly offended as they may not have expected for King to go there.
