Norma Mills
Norma Mills asked Gail Carriger:

Your books are phenomenal. The series deals with strong, female characters, without the need for a boyfriend or "hero". How did you come up with such a powerful heroine without the need for a strong male lead in/influence?

Gail Carriger Reality, I suppose. I have adored all of my chosen partners in life, both lovers and friends, and I have been rich and lucky in them all. But I actually also really do enjoy being single. I think it's a viable option for some. I was once asked "what were the two things you will never be." My answer? Bored or lonely.

So far as my characters are concerned I just believe that it's more romantic for a whole, strong, courageous woman to choose to love, than to need to love as part of her identity. Choice is sexy. Desperation is not.
