So I get that this is fiction and sometimes you have to suspend disbelief to enjoy it, but I found it so unrealistic that Mariana is a group therapist but somehow has free rein to be on campus, actually have a room there, and act as a detective in a murder investigation. How does that happen? Did someone ask her (besides her niece) to stay and help?

I was questioning this very thing myself. I don't understand why she wants to play detective and solve the murders and what she she could possibly gain from it. Also, she completely leaves her patients and her work behind like... ??
And no, no one asks her to stay. All the people investigating the case (the authorities) repeatedly tell her to stop poking her nose in it.

Bc this book was so full of plot holes and the characters—particularly Mariana—did completely nonsensical things in order to advance the bad plotting?

It is Cambridge, not just any old state college in the US. It's not unusual to be able to stay in your former college there. Less so during the academic year, but it is possible. Several universities in the UK will rent out unused rooms to budget friendly travelers.
