A Goodreads user asked Eloisa James:

I have loved your books for years! I recently re-read a couple of your much older books and noticed a distinct difference in the relationships portrayed. It mimics my own romantic history, moving from the idea "love hurts" in my early 20's to "real love nurtures" by my 30s . The Wilde H's show more respect for the h's and the h's refuse to be used. Was this change conscious or simply an effect of evolving over time?

Eloisa James Hi there Angelina! What an interesting question -- the change is conscious, I suppose, because romance writers have to stay abreast of the contemporary moment. I remember freezing while writing Seven Minutes in Heaven, for example--I realized that I didn't feel comfortable with a kidnapping anymore (so the hero asks if he can kidnap the heroine). But books are always a personal journey too. I was very early in my marriage when I wrote my first books; naturally things were more tempestuous. Now we're surviving quarantine together and "nurturing" is definitely high on my list for a great hero (or husband). Thank you for the question!
