Good question. Since we are all writing for ourselves, as a way of letting our own individuality and individual talents sort out the apparent world, there is no calculation involved. Write exactly what you feel like writing and forget genre labels.

I just finished The Terranauts, but I am a little dissatisfied with the end. Or maybe not, maybe I am just dissatisfied, because the characters are totally human,normal,average, in everything, aside from being Terranauts? I read it, while riding a raft around Brandenburgs waterworld with 6 other people. We were totally in nature,not much other stuff but birds, trees water. It was the perfect book for the adventure.

When music/ non-literature media influences your work, do you find that it is more often the jumping-off-point/inspiration for a story or something you add to an existing work-in-progress as further texture? (I'm thinking, specifically, of Bruce Springsteen and "Greasy Lake," but am asking more broadly).
