I just finished The Terranauts, but I am a little dissatisfied with the end. Or maybe not, maybe I am just dissatisfied, because the characters are totally human,normal,average, in everything, aside from being Terranauts? I read it, while riding a raft around Brandenburgs waterworld with 6 other people. We were totally in nature,not much other stuff but birds, trees water. It was the perfect book for the adventure.

T. Coraghessan Boyle Be careful, now: you don't want to get those pages wet. But it must have been an interesting experience, reading of closure and invented nature while experiencing the real thing.

Loved your book about Frank Lloyd Wright, The Women. As much as I admire his architecture, that was the first time I really saw him in a sympathetic way. Even more, the structure of that novel was probably the most inventive I have ever come across - and it worked so well! How did you think that up?

First of all, I love your stories. Most of them seem to me to have a very melancholy feel, and many strike me as downright depressing. Do you consider yourself a "melancholy" person in general? Or does writing these stories help excise those types of feelings?
