I did not lose interest at all. To me, it felt like every part of this book was important to building the backdrop and drop hints. Reading some other reviews, it seems some people think it does drag. But personally, I loved every page of this and would love if there had been even more. Honestly, I read it as an arc on my netgalley app and I did not even realize how long it was until I came to review it on goodreads.

I found so much of the first 30% completely unnecessary. And even the parts that actually did build into the story were so wordy. I kept wanting the author to get on with it. The characters never really fleshed out much, either. In the end, it wasn't one I wished I hadn't taken the time to finish, but I was kind of relieved to reach the end, which was a neat idea that the author didn't seem to know how to really deliver, either. After taking 600 pages to build to the end, it was then kind of rushed and only half explained and ended a little abruptly.

I normally read books straight through with only a few breaks. I couldn't do that with this one and needed to finish it over two weeks without reading it every night. The pace was a bit slow, but you do keep wanting to go back to it.

I felt like it was terribly dragging! And I was listening to the audio book at double speed...it was STILL too slow :/
Anne Smith
First third is uneven and then it rolls over the crest, gathering speed through to an exhilarating end. Read it in three days and no regrets.
Miranda Churchill
Read it in 5 days. 'Nuff said.

I was worried about this too but it's written in a way that makes it almost impossible to drag. There's a ton of story switching between modern times and the 1900s so you can't really get bored, or even stop paying attention. It was actually pretty refreshing to get such a detailed view of all of the characters.
Tory
It definitely did not drag for me. I loved every storyline and was fully engaged the whole time.
Lisa
It's dragging like crazy for me. I'm about half way through and thinking of quitting. This is not normally a problem for me. I read big fat books super quickly all of the time.
Eric
Skip the modern chapters (which is at least 50% of the book) and just read the period storyline. The modern stuff really drags and is nothing but whiny characters lamenting their dumb relationships and insecurities about their careers and stuff. The period storyline is very compelling and fast-paced.

I raced through it in a week. I couldn't put it down. Yes, it was too long and some parts were unnecessary. But it was still well written.
Claudine
I felt like the first half of the book was a lot of prep, but it really pays off and if I were to reread I would pay more attention to the beginning. The first legit creepy moment in the beginning part of the book was the perfect amount of eerie.
WitchyFingers
I raced through it in four days, and I usually don't read books this long. It was like watching a miniseries or binge watching a show on Netflix.
