Narelle Works I hope you read the book Teena. It is well worth staying with it. There is a twist to it that puts it all into perspective.

Having read a few of the authors books you will see the differences from the beginning of each, quite dramatically so in some.

Rebecca is deliberately written from the viewpoint of a naive young woman with poor self esteem. It shines a light on what perceptions do to create myths around an event that are seemingly straightforward.

I loved it and have read it a number of times. I hope you enjoy unravelling the mystery.
Denelle i hated every character in the book for a good while. keep reading...you are exactly where the author wants you! mwahahaha...
Dorsa first I felt exactly the same and then....WOW everything changed....now everything seems so different.....keep reading and then you'll fall in love with the book:)
Linda When you finish Rebecca, you'll want to reread at least the first two chapters....
Della Scott I can relate. The first time I tried reading this, it left me cold. I posted about it on bookcrossing, and some people there(not all of them) urged me to stick with it. Now I am half through it, and like it. It is frustrating that the protagonist seems to be unnamed. I think that it's to underscore what a nonentity she is, or feels she is. I think it's low self-esttem more than lack of intelligence that is her problem. It's also sad that she is so afraid of her husband and the staff at Manderley that she doesn't even want to admit breaking a figurine or ask what happens to leftover food. The goodreads description is a little off. She wasn't exactly a maid to Mrs. Van Hopper, more of a paid companion. Options were more limited for young ladies then, especially orphans like her. And the British class system placed restrictions on people that didn't exist in America. Marriages of convenience, whirlwind courtships and marriages to escape(often to much older men as in this case) were common enough back in the day. It happened in my family. Some of them were happy, others not so much.
Cal You will realise that she is exactly how the author wants her to seem, like a bit of an idiot, naive, young...keep going and you won't be able to put it down.
Marsh "Bad Sci Fi" Bloom She is a hard protagonist to follow since she's so frustrating. She doesn't even have a name! She's supposed to be that way. She's trying to occupy the empty space left by Rebecca but all of those qualities of not being Rebecca are actually her strengths.

Keep reading as others suggested.
Shingeling never judge a book by what you think you know about it before even finishing it. it is not quite a novel you can simply go through without actually reading between the lines. the narrator is actually pretty mysterious. the reader knows nothing about her, not her exact age (although it is obv that she is not older than 18y old), not even her name and just little hints about her childhood. the book reminds me a lot of Jane Eyre, even though the narrators are pretty different in terms of character traits.. btw it is just what du Maurier wanted..to make us think that the narrator is inexperienced, naive etc :)..
Beth I didn't get into it for about three/four chapters, and thought about putting it down. But trust me it is the best book I have ever read, and once you're hooked there will be no putting it down!
Laura Devitt I don't think she is dumb or confused. I think she is a sweet, gentle person. She is a shy, quiet person. Someone who has no "people", no family, no friends. She is alone in the world. Someone who is always overlooked, a wallflower. She gets swept up in a world that she doesn't understand and is overwhelming.
Jessica L. Jackson This book is a classic Gothic novel and well worth continuing the read to the end. The writing is so fluid and full of brilliant descriptive imagery. I am listening to it right now and the narrator is wonderful. Once you finish the book, please watch the movie. It is also amazing.
Caroline Chiasson The twists and the ending are the best part! Keep reading :)
Sury Vemagal Pl keep reading. Patience. After chapter 18 you will not be able to put down the book. Most probably you may also weep ! There is a method in the author's writing. She is deliberately building up the story, chapter by chapter. It is art. After chapter 19 your heart will start beating faster and faster. Sometimes, the tension will be unbearable. Keep reading!
M G I didn't liked the protagonist either, but the writting style is so good, it's almost perfect. For my part, I read it for Mrs. Danvers. And as for Rebecca, she's is not that perfect, boring character, you think she is from the start, there's so much more.
....Je Reviens...
(that's how her boat was called)
Sarah Cheney My motivation is simple, I fell in love with the musical of the German musical adaption. I didn't even realize there was a book so now I'd be excited just to know the story of such haunting and beautiful music.
Pam I also felt that the character is a little too self-effacing but remember her lowly position and the period - young women of her generation were not as worldly as today's. The description are beautiful and the book worth reading for that reason alone.
Taylor Caruso - Bucher I felt the same way at first! I hope that you finished the book! If not I encourage you to pick it back up, and start where you left off. You wont regret it!
Rowena Sears I think that the author has done this to create a contrast with Rebecca. I won't reveal any more, you'll have to read it yourself, but Rebecca is the complete opposite.
xoSammiDxo I felt the same about the writing, but not the same about the character. I thought we were all once young, naive, and relatable to this character. Suppose just because it is I does not mean it is all. However, I read forward and so should you. Skip paragraphs if you must, but not too many or else you'll miss it....
Sue Glad I saw this question, because I have to finish it for book club, but I really don't want to go on, it is boring me to tears and the main character is so whiny!!
D.L. Blanchard It's an older novel written by a British author, which means the style is more in keeping with those times. But.. stick with it and you'll learn she isn't so dumb. Eventually she stands up and fights back. It gets better and better.

My novel "Blue Moon Bench" was inspired by this classic, and is about a woman who marries the perfect man, and finds his first wife died in a mysterious way. Is she married to a murderer?

You might want to watch Hitchcock's movie. He ended it differently, but it will leave you wanting to read the novel I'm sure. Wonderfully suspenseful.
Mary I felt the same way, but after a while the story begins to move faster. I found it interesting and worth the read. I was also aggravated at the girl/narrator for being so naive, so I tried to keep in mind that the story was written and takes place in the late 30's. That doesn't excuse all of her behavior, but it helped me keep reading.
Cathy Ledvina I hope you read it too! The newest version of the movie came out today on Netflix which is why I reread it! Totally worth the twist at the end! She is naive, not dumb, as you put it. Keep reading and put yourself in her shoes.
Christine Mathieu I particularly enjoy the narrative style, because many of the modern novels contain way too many dialogues and way too little atmosphere and landscape description. This one however is very atmospheric.
Barbara Phillips She is ignorant and naive, there's a difference. There is a brilliant twist worth waiting for. I love this book and have read it several times
Shawneshoo Eshoo way too much narration throughout. I don't think it ever gets better.
Not a good storyline either.
Walt Terry To this 59-year-old guy who had seen the movie, this book was very frustrating. I finished it, but the middle section was a long slog. So, so much of the same inner turmoil, and a wink at the end instead of the big finish I was expecting. Two stars.
Lan I agree, I had a really hard time sticking w the book in the 1st few chapters. I am not a big fan of narrative either. The book is moving at a better pace, I am on ch 12.
