It sort of happens. Sometimes it is the publisher, other times you feel you can't tell the whole story in one novel and indicate to the publisher what you would like to do. Some books are just single books, like The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell. So it varies.

The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell has become one of my favorite books and certainly left a big emotional impact behind. The characters were so well crafted, especially Sam himself. What were the influences behind writing into literary existence someone like Sam? And what was the process of weaving the story together like?
