The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell has become one of my favorite books and certainly left a big emotional impact behind. The characters were so well crafted, especially Sam himself. What were the influences behind writing into literary existence someone like Sam? And what was the process of weaving the story together like?

Robert Dugoni The Literary influence was John Irving and Patrick Conroy. Loved how they wrote about a life lived, I always wanted to write that kind of a story. The story took many drafts and I had to contemplate the various scenarios that made the most sense for the characters. Several scenes on the cutting room floor, but writing is rewriting.
