Shannon asked N.K. Jemisin:

Why do you write most (or all?) of your books in series? Do you feel like there is usually a particular volume in the series that is weakest?

N.K. Jemisin I'm an epic fantasy writer at my core, so I like lengthy stories with multiple arcs. I don't generally think there's a particular volume in a series that's weakest -- in part because "what's weakest" is relative to the reader's taste. It's popular to malign the second book in a trilogy, I've noticed, but I think that's facile. Second books have a particular job to do, and that job is *not* to be as "hook"-y as the beginning or explosive as the ending. If it does its job well, however, a good second book gives important layers of meaning to the hook and climax.
