Pamela Block asked N.K. Jemisin:

1)How do you describe your work? Afrofuturism, speculative fiction, science fiction and fantasy that might describe your work, but what do you call it and why? 2)Sami Schalk (author, Bodyminds Reimagined: (Dis)ability, Race, and Gender in Black Women's Speculative Fiction) recommended you to me bc I love Octavia Butler. Was Butler an influence for you? If so how, and which works of hers resonated with you?

N.K. Jemisin I don't describe it. My job's just writing, and I'm bad with labels, so I leave that to scholars and marketing folks to come up with. :)

Butler's an influence, sure. Mostly just in knowing that she existed, and that her blackness shows itself in her work unapologetically. That let me know I could publish in this genre, and be unapologetic as well.
