How would THE CITY WE BECAME have been different if it had been written five years ago? Was the world ready for this story then? Were you ready for this story then. I guess I want to know what is the importance of NOW for this story.

N.K. Jemisin I don't know that it would've been any different. Note that "The City Born Great," which is the short story that became TCWB, *was* written 5 years ago. The only reason I didn't turn it into a novel then is that I was hip-deep in working on the Broken Earth series. I'm always awash in ideas. Probably won't live long enough to get to half of them. :)
