Rachel Roth <spoiler> I believe it is because the ones the Bunnies made were just another luxury in their already luxurious life, while on the other hand Samantha made them out of loneliness and the need of a friend as well as the desire to leave the expectations others had of her.

Ava represented the person Samantha wanted to be: uncaring about what she had or didn't and free to be her own person without feeling judged by others. When Samantha joins the Bunnies it shows that her desire to be accepted and fit in even if it means changing herself was stronger than accepting herself the way she was without the validation of others. This is the reason why Ava disappears completely from her life at this point but when she returns to pull Samantha out of the cult it shows how she chooses herself over being one of the Bunnies.

On the other hand, when she creates Max she is back in the cult but she now realizes that it is not what she really wants, she prefers to be herself (which means being with Ava) but is too scared to break free from being accepted so she creates an alternate version of herself that is brave enough for her, not only to leave the cult but to open up to Ava.

I think Samantha´s Darlings are stronger because she makes them out of herself and the person she wishes to be at the moment, she doesn't try to make them disposable and replaceable the way the Bunnies do them.

Meghan Heather Fully agree with Rachel's answer. I just wanted to add that I think this is further proven by Max's love of Ava + hatred of the Bunnies. Those are the feelings of Samantha that were deeply infused into her bunny. Based on her motivations and feelings when creating him, Samantha's bunny is a reflection of her - and that's why Max does what he does. Samantha can also be intensely self deprecating, so it made sense to me that Max was constantly belittling her.

Additionally, it's interesting to think about whether the Bunnies knew that Samantha would create something more intense because of her loneliness. They mention several times that they believed Samantha's darkness would bring something new to their experiment. They may have speculated that her need would help her create something more realistic.
Ian On top of the other answers, which I agree with, it's mentioned that the Bunnies knew that Samantha had created Ava from a swan. I would think that their knowledge of her superior ability was a large part of what drew them to include her in the first place.
