Lois McMaster Bujold
This question is answered at length in Sidelines: Talks and Essays https://www.amazon.com/Sidelines-Essa... (also on Nook and iBooks), in an essay titled "My First Novel". I see I wrote it in 1990, which means I was remembering events way better than I would if I attempted to retype it all out today, nearly 3 decades later.

...Goodness, that edition might could use a little tidying. I haven't looked at it for ages. The context notes seem to fall at the ends of prior essays, not at the start of the next as they should. Well, we'll see how bored I get this winter.

For the collected novella versions of Penric, do they include the original covers? Having seen a couple of Dan Dos Santos’s amazing covers, now I want them. But I am not an ebook guy, and missed all the previous editions. I have been waiting for them to come out in relatively affordable collected editions as Mass market pb or Trade pb.

This isn't a question, but I haven't been able to get the system to send you a message any other way? My dad loved your books, but we especially enjoyed Curse of Chalion. Sadly he died in 2019 from mesothelioma. Which is when I discovered that the memorial ribbons for all lung cancers are white or cream. My mom and I are now planning a Bastard's Day ribbon for this year. Thank you! Alexa

Loved your works ever since picking up Shards of Honour in a humble bundle. When Ivan's place in the Imperial line of succession was discussed in Captain Vorpatril's Alliance, it got me thinking about the issue. Did Gregor ever establish a line of succession in the event of his death? Would Miles or Ivan be at the top of the list or perhaps would Aral be called back onto the Imperial camp stool?
