I don't read much into the ending other then what it says. They embraced the "old ways" and left the homes and community that had failed them. Nicole stated that wearing the wedding dress was pointless. The dress was something from a white man ceremony and not the native ways. I believe Evan prepared their new home and his family were going to join him there.

I was wondering that too. She did have a dream where Evan was dead. But his father also had a dream that he and Evan were standing near a fire. I think the anniversary part was because they all lost the amount of time after their modern world ended. Also, I think the marriage reference was because so many people died and many people left the community after Scott was killed, it made no sense to have the ceremony. I think he did survive.

I assumed it only meant they had long ago lost track of time and so would be unable to mark the date. If he's dead, then "he's waiting for us" seems to me to imply that they are also expecting to die soon, but they are carrying on and intend to survive.
