I loved Miracle Creek for so many reasons, especially the highs and lows of motherhood and adults being made childlike as they struggle with a language in a new country. It also provided a window into the world of parenting special needs children, which I have not read much about. What drew you to write about that?

Thank you so much, Suzanne. It makes me so happy to hear that you loved Miracle Creek! As for writing about parenting special-needs children, I think it's because of my own experience as the mom of three kids who all experienced medical issues (although, thankfully, they're all fine now). I also did HBOT personally with one of my kids, which I wrote about in an essay for Vogue magazine (tinyurl.com/vogueangiekim), which may interest you. Through our double dives for HBOT and through speech therapy and auditory processing therapy (one of my kids was born deaf in one ear), I got to be close friends with moms of children on the autism spectrum and cerebral palsy as well. I hope this answers your question! Thank you again.

Angie- Glad you liked my review. I see you are reading Two Nights in Lisbon by Chris Pavone- I've already ordered it. Have you read his first book, The Expats? I saw interesting cultural parallels between his characters and the family in Miracle Creek. There are assimilation steps and barriers involved in being part of an American community in Arkansas and an expat community in Luxemburg.

Elizabeth came to the right conclusion by the end realizing that she was forcing behaviors on her autistic child but I think it was a missed opportunity to write this more explicitly. I would’ve liked said on how this kind of therapy impacts the experience of the actual autistic person. Applied Behavioral Analysis is truly traumatic for autistic individuals. Would you consider delving more into this in your next book?
