Deborah Preysz
Deborah Preysz asked Amor Towles:

What is the significance of the parable quoted in the beginning of the book Rules of Civility (Many are called but few are chosen)? It also appears in the titles of the first chapter (Many are Called) and the last (Few are Chosen).

Amor Towles Deborah,
The short answer is that the collection of Walker Evans photographs described in the prologue was called Many Are Called. The longer answer is more complicated. To get that, you should send me the question through the Contact page at amortowles.com
