I think the author made this choice also to leave Kya in her marsh, secluded from everyone in town. Had they had children, Kya would have had to interact with the town, take the kids to school, possibly talk to other adults. In a way, having Kya not have kids allowed her to stay wild.

As someone who has been suffering through infertility with her husband for the last 4 years, I appreciated that ending. Because life isnt always what we plan for and Kyas life never really was. Plus, as you said, life can be fulfilling without children. And it wasnt the sort of book that needed perfectly happy endings.

It is quite common to choose to not have children; there are many reasons to prefer a life without having children (not wanting to contribute to further environmental/ecological damage and overpopulation, not feeling like you have enough resources, not trusting your genetic makeup in terms of physical and/or mental health issues, wanting to spend one's money on various pursuits, travel, hobbies, career paths, etc. that tend to preclude having children, etc.) I was surprised to see this as a question (no offense meant); as a woman nearing 40 who has decided without a doubt to not have children, I admittedly get tired of people assuming that's the "happy ending" or best ending. I have seen enough friends and family with kids and without kids to know that those with kids are no happier than those without. If anything, those w/o kids have had much more exciting lives and pursuits and freedoms. I love kids, but I much prefer to be an "auntie" figure, personally. :)
