Justin asked:

I hope this doesn't sound too rude, but just how much lgbt stuff is in this book? I don't mind it (hell, a book I read recently actually hinted at a lgbt romance between two characters), but I'm curious if it's a major theme throughout the story, or is it more of something that comes up from time to time. I'm really curious about the book, cause the premise sounds fantastic, and I mean, damn is that cover awesome!

AmadorBibliophile I'm curious if you contact authors of other books to ask how much hetero "stuff" there is in the book?

I mean are you looking for books with ACE/aromantic characters? or books that just don't address sex/romance?

IMHO you are ABSOLUTELY allowed to pre-judge whether or not you want to read a story for absolutely any reason. There are a so many good authors/stories out there...

but should your answers to all of the above be no, though everyone else
who answered you was insanely polite about it (kudos to you Muir & Company!), I am going to call out your question as sexist/heterosexist.
Not "rude."

Tamsyn Muir Thank you so much for your interest in Gideon the Ninth, and I don't think you sound rude at all.

It's hard to quantify how much LGBT content is in the book -- the plot contains arguably very little romance, and conflicts/issues surrounding being LGBTQIA+ don't come up at all and never will. Hilariously, the word 'lesbian' comes up in the blurb, but is never used in the book.

That said, it's a book written by an LGBTQIA+ author about two LGBTQIA+ leads, and I can Word-of-God confirm that the POV protagonist is a lesbian whose interest in women is very obvious throughout the book. The non-POV protagonist's interest in bones is very obvious throughout the book. Hope that helps...

Again, thank you heaps, and isn't the cover GREAT??? Check out artist Tommy Arnold's work at http://www.tommyarnoldart.com/ and designer Jamie Stafford-Hill's at http://www.staffordhill.net/-- both are so boss!
W.H. Lock I think I can offer an answer here for everyone coming along and wondering how much LGBT content there is.

Without spoilers: the narrator tells you Gideon is a lesbian. She says she's a lesbian.

This book is not written for the Male Gaze.

No bosom's bounce beckoningly. Nothing quivers in anticipation. Nothing gets dewy. No soft lips parted in anticipation.

No woman wants to suddenly have sex with Gideon and look for any opportunity to suddenly give in to urges they were unaware of having.

So don't worry.

You'll have a great time reading this book.

Gideon is kick ass and a lot of fun. You'll like it.
Richard It sounds super ignorant, actually.
Taemon Actually hinted, you say! You sure love living on the edge!
Tattooed Bibliophile Hey Justin! I'm currently reading, and it's more of something that comes up from time to time, not a major theme. Gideon, the protagonist, is obviously attracted to women, but romance is about the last thing on the minds of any of the characters in this book. And agreed, one of the best bad-ass covers of the year for sure!
Gbolahan Errrrrrr...what is lgbt "stuff"?
Sam Ley Answered fairly well by others, but I'll add my perspective. First, I'll read your question as "is it soft-core porn?" In that case, the answer is "no". The main character self-identifies as a lesbian, but other than referring to dirty magazines a few times (mostly to try to piss off another character) there is no more sexual talk than you'd get in an episode of Johnny Bravo.
Susan McCarter I can't imagine anyone--teens or adults--having a problem with the LGBT aspect of this wonderfully entertaining novel.

Go read it and thank us reviewers later. :)
Rachael I wish there was more :(
J.B. Rafferty Thankfully there is about as much wanton sex in this book as there is at any Major League Baseball game. This is a wonderfully original tale that is a must read. This story is light on sexual innuendos and includes them in a very natural way to give depth to the characters. Tamsyn's writing is a fun adjective-riddled joy through twists that will keep you guessing, and frustrated that you are always wrong.. This story will whisk you away to a world and you will be better for it.
Alex Gideon is certainly gay for the ladies. In one of the best blurbs ever, Charles Stross describes it as, "Lesbian necromancers (explore a haunted gothic palace) in space!" And, this is both absolutely spot-on and oversells the erotic aspects one might expect. Stross could have said, “Lady necromancers who are also gay, in space, etc.," but it lacks zing. So, there is matter of fact routine sexual identity, but no actual sex per se.
N.E. Body Basically none. One character thinks another character of the same sex is attractive. That’s it. I can’t imagine thinking it is an important part of the book unless you are heavily invested in the issue one way or the other.
Kasey Turner It's pretty understated. Gideon finds women attractive, but there's no sex of any kind.
Kay Dee (what is your storygraph name? mine is in my bio. join me!) Meadows wow. the answers to this question are quite a ride. lol but i am glad it was asked and answered.
David Hambling Lots, but lighthearted romance rather than erotica.
