asked:
It's a standalone, right? Or is it gonna suddenly become "first in a series" after I read it and come across some sort of cliffhanger at the end? (Someone who has read it already, please tell it doesn't have any of those and can be read as a standalone)

Hey, I'm sorry I didn't answer this question sooner. Somehow I didn't see it! The answer is, this book is a standalone. No plans to write any more books in this universe, whatsoever. That said:
1) There's a short story that follows a couple of the supporting characters and shows what happened to them after the book ended. It's going to be published online (for free) in February.
2) This book has been optioned as a TV show by Sony and Mom de Guerre Productions, and if the show actually gets on the air, we would definitely try to continue the story after the end of the book. (If the show lasts more than a couple seasons.)

It's a standalone. Not to say that every problem is resolved at the end, but the resolution is solid.

It is a standalone, and I would argue that the book comes to an emotional and character-driven resolution. There are future events that are not resolved on the page, but I found that to be refreshing. I did not want this novel to hit the plot points that other Sci-Fi novels do. Instead, it stands out.

The ending has sequel written all over it as far as I’m concerned. As it stands, I found the ending wholly unsatisfying and somewhat aggravating.
John Mahoney
The ending is not a cliff hanger but it closes with a lot of unfinished business. I figure it is stand alone if it does not sell well. If it sells well, there will be sequels.
My bet is that there will be sequels.

It doesn't read as a standalone. I'm surprised to see people saying it is. You feel as though the story is just getting started, and it's done. It's really, really aggravating! Absolutely nothing is resolved, in any way, at all. I was so surprised to turn the page and find myself faced with the Acknowledgments. Extremely annoying.

I thought it might be the first in a series. I also wondered if the story of how humans came to the planet January might merit a novel (or even more). The few details provided through The City in the Middle of the Night of an uneasy alliance that dissolves into armed conflict aboard a giant ark ship (The Mothership) could be great!
Christian
It's a standalone book with a somewhat ambiguous ending.

I just started reading this, and happily engaged. I'm sorry I came here to have the ending critiqued in a Q&A. Let Anders answer the question.
