Love Cat Clarke she is one of my favourites (if not my favourite author). however, I take issue with the plot of this book. Why did the student need to be transgender to take issue with their sexist school dress code? Couldn't a female student not want to wear a skirt without believing shes a boy inside? Seems to be fighting sexism with sexism. No issue with a story about a trans kid but this specific plot?

Yes, there are plenty of girls who didn't want to wear skirts, but put up with it, likely believing that they were the only one who was uncomfortable (a very common experience for girls - especially young girls - is believing that YOU are the source of your problems, that it's your fault for not liking skirts, it's your fault for not being girly enough, etc...) Liv took action because his discomfort in skirts (in his case, due to him being trans) led to him realizing that the rule was unfair to everyone, and fighting not for his right to wear pants, but for EVERYONE.

Because it's an issue that needs to be talked about and representation matters. Trans kids need to be acknowledged and supported, but there isn't much literature out there for them. I feel like Liv fighting on the side of everyone is the opposite of sexism as he realizes this doesn't just effect him, but his friends and the entire school.

Because trans people exist. And, frankly, making a big stink about it being a trans boy instead of just a girl fed up with sexism feels low-key transphobic.
