Struggling a bit with the technology here: my earlier answer does not seem to appear. Forgive me if I am repeating myself.
I have based Flora's condition on my own first and second hand experience of osteoarthritis. I deliberately kept things a little vague, as I wanted her illness to stand for just about any chronic pain that people might suffer. I am no expert, I have just written how I believe this character would have managed the condition. I hope you think it rings true.

Are time steppers immortal? Can't she then, go back and get William? If Gideon learned it, can't Elizabeth and Tegan? What was Gideon doing while the twins tortured Tegan all those days? Elizabeth was so distraught in book two. Book two made her look like a novice and she was so fierce in book one. I got the whole student surpassing the teacher vibe, but Elizabeth needs a book 3 to redeem herself! Lol I need a book 3!
