Eloisa James He was young - and it was a different time. Mistresses were expected. If you read that part again, you'll see that it was almost like a job for him, and he was fond of his mistress. He didn't marry for love, because the aristocracy didn't, in the Georgian period. It just wasn't done. So he had to learn what his vows meant.

I really can't create perfect people all the time and just pair them off. It's too boring--and it's unrealistic. Elijah had a lot to learn -- but he did learn!
