Rarely are things so black and white. Calling Manny a man-whore is too simple of a classification for a character that was well developed in this novel. As other readers have commented, Manny's desire to feel safe, to feel loved, to feel understood, even the need to feel taken care of, makes it a bit easier to understand the possible reasons why he had affairs. Esther Perel talks about these issues in her books/podcast/TED talk. I'm going to ignore the fact that you thought he was Mexican instead of Ecuadorian after reading the 400+ pg. book.

He’s not Mexican.

Though I don't think it was the author's intention to condone his behavior, I think the purpose was to show that Manny was lonely. He was a relatively young man saddled with caring for his first child often on his own while Lucia experienced an episode of a disorder he knew nothing about. That is a very isolating experience and being with other women is just what he found comfort in.

I'm not sure what Mexico has to do with Manny. He's South American, not North American. He was from Ecuador, a country which was prominently featured in the book.

He apparently didn't drink, he was relatively immature, and he had to find a way to quell the dark anger he probably held when things were so out of control and he didn't know what to do. He found an outlet that allowed him to stay with Lucia and take care of their baby. I am not saying that this is necessarily a great thing to do in a relationship but it sounds like it kept him relatively sane, didn't hurt Lucia, and kept their marriage together. I'm with Asia below.

To clarify - he is Ecuadorian. He was a young man who loves all types of women.

I thought about this too. perhaps because the author is a woman, writing in a man's voice, she kept him simple. But some men are like that...
