I think you know what I mean, when he went back to his country he was more confidante and cocky and a man whore as its more comon to be so in other countries
He's clearly not Mexican, as Giovanna stated. They go back to Ecuador, not Mexico. They are two different countries. Regarding his behavior, in narrative it is explained that it is the culmination of events: returning to Ecuador and no longer having the element of fear in his day to day life because he is not undocumented, his alienation from Lucia and her condition, the secrecy Lucia maintains in her life that is, for the most part, separate from his life. It's an unstable, crumbling relationship that has nothing to do with his country of origin or race. Not excusing his behavior but all of the characters in the book have their flaws and he's just another imperfect human.
