I'd like to know how Goodreads allows someone to rate a book that won't be available for months! And the rating is 2 stars! How does that happen? Tana French is a terrific author; her previous books rate highly; every author can have a dud, but shouldn't the goodreads reviewer actually READ the book before giving it 2 stars?! I think Good reads should remove that rating.

Jim Are you annoyed the rating came from an ARC or galley, or are you annoyed the rating is low for an author you like? The former is a legit complaint, the latter is just your opinion. I hate ratings of any sort from an ARC or galley, but I also hate when people argue someone's opinion of a book just because it doesn't jive with their opinion. We all have our favorite authors, but even a great author can write a piece of shit book, and giving high ratings for shit books just because you want to be seen as a loyal fan of said author is unfair to other Goodreads members. If you want to kiss up to an author, do it on their website, not a public book forum.
Heather I read an advance e-copy of the book. I order the Adult Fiction for a medium size library and French is one of my favorite authors. I love the Murder Squad series, but I always worry when an author goes off their established path. I asked for an advance read so I could judge whether I'd need to order multiple copies of this title or if one would do. If I disliked a book I wouldn't put anything on Goodreads without clearly explaining WHY and reminding folks we all have different tastes.
zendegy Way are you so angry about it? It's just one person's opinion. One that I, sadly, have come to share...
John Goodreads doesn't control who reads what and how people rate books. What proof does this website have that someone has read what they say they've read? You can rate any book anything you want, whether you've read it or not and whether it's readily available or not.
Paula A lot of the time the publishers send out pre-releases of the book to bookstores and certain readers. Having worked at several book stores, I have seen this happen. That would be my best guess.
Marilee I really doubt the person giving this un-released book just two stars has actually read it. If there were ARC's out there, we'd have been hearing about it and getting genuine reviews. Also, the person giving a low rating doesn't seem to have an presence on Goodreads other than this one "rating". The word TROLL comes to mind.
Ollies_Mom 🤣For real? Not familiar with publishing, are you?
Asterope It's on netgalley right now, so people can get ARCs

Emily In general, they have to allow ratings before the release date, because of Advanced Readers Copies. Not saying this is the case here - it seems too early for an ARC - but that's why Goodreads has to allow early ratings.
Lee If the reviewer actually read an ARC, fair play to ye as they say in Ireland. But yes I've seen many, many reviews, pro and con, for yet-to-be released books and it's clear they didn't read the book but only wanted to "rate" the book to say "I luv Author X can't wait to read!!!!" or "Author X is trash" or even "This book's price is too high, greedy publisher!!!" It's beyond irritating.
Fenris So rude! People get advance copies all of the time, which they read and then review.
Alice There are trolls who post negative ratings for books before ARCs are released. All they have to go on is the publisher's description. They enjoy posting negative reviews. I complained about this and was told that Goodreads does not censor what people post.
