I agree. I also think the police would have read through Ellie's diary that her mom read 10 years later. The police would have seen Ellie's comments about Noelle and looked into this lead. I did like the book anyway though.

Exactly. I also found it hard to believe that the medical examiner couldn't tell that Ellie had been long dead before her bones were broken, yet they could tell that she was hit by a car. Really?
Tammy Mitchell
Frequently when the police get an idea in their minds, it clouds their investigation. Oftentimes when a teen goes missing, cops will lean toward her/him being a runaway. When they choose, possibly subconsciously, to believe the runaway theory, a search becomes perfunctory. Things simply get overlooked.
Jodi Pomerleau
I thought the exact same thing...that was not the only difficult plot point....seriously can one order sperm from the Internet and it is viable enough to implant it without medical technology in an unconscious teen, and it works?
Susan Wolford
Remember how when Noelle "ran into" Ellie that she didn't recognize her right away? I think that as soon as Noelle was dismissed from tutoring that the family dismissed Noelle almost immediately. Mom knew that Noelle's name sounded familiar, but she didn't know why. She completely slipped the family's mind, which was one reason Noelle was so angry.

Yes, I would think they would have read her diary and the "bunny boiler" phrase might have jumped out. If not the police reading the diary, surely the mother would have read it and brought it to the police's attention. Also unbelievable that Floyd would have been with someone like Noelle for so long. And what about the end? Poppy is a genius of sorts, searches the internet yet she hasn't been told the "whole" story of her birth and what happened? I read tons of these psychological thrillers and this one- the premise was just too unsavory for me.

I completely agree. I was so incredibly sad at the end of the book because I feel like the people in this poor girls life failed her. I know she must've told her boyfriend if she told her sister about her feelings about the tutor. I wish that someone had thought of it sooner than 10 years later... and only because of Poppy.

That bothered me as well. I didn't believe police incompetence to that degree in a search for a loved young girl last seen on a street. The book was so good otherwise that I let that slip by.
Also noteworthy was how easy it was to get her pregnant by mail order sperm?! Like really, when so many try so hard, this Noelle got her pregnant.... but again, a well liked story of 4.5 rather than 5 stars.

Noelle is that unpopular; she can be ruled out as a suspect. Oh, Because the author needed the story to go on. I still enjoyed it though.

I agree and also do not understand this missing point in an otherwise great story...a missing child would have resulted in a more thorough investigation and the obvious would be the last person/place she was seen with AND a look into any regular contacts (aka-Noelle as her weekly tutor)
Jessica Gane
I think for the same reason nobody investigated her disappearance - she is just the forgetful.

I thought so too! But I loved the book anyway.

Yes it's ridiculous - she did the same thing in The Family Upstairs when someone wandered in and found a coin on the floor the police missed. She obviously has a very low opinion of the police.

My middle school daughter would like to read this book. Can anyone tell me if there is any graphic sexual language or violent sex scenes in the book? I am not trying to completely shield her, but I would like to keep her from any violent sexual references. Thanks!

Did I miss something...how did Ellie get impregnated? I listened to the audiobook and did it skip a part where she was drugged?
