I read this book after the film. I honestly only saw the film because it had Natalie Portman and Oscar Issac in it and the director is amazing. I won't give any spoilers, but the film blew my mind and was fantastically bizarre and wonderful and beautiful. I learned that it was based on the book and promptly bought the whole series.
I've only read annihilation so far. It has much more differences than similarities to the film for sure. While they both portray this odd, unnatural, alien land, they do so in vastly different ways. The book seems like a more objective and scientific portrayal of area X (called the Shimmer in the movie.)
That being said, I think you could read the book before or after the film and still get the same result, seeing as they are so different. Definitely do both though! They are both such a trip.

The movie is a feast for the eyes and ears but I found the story lacking. Then I started reading the book.
Wow! Translating this to a movie can not be easy but worth trying.
The sights and sounds of it only enrich my reading. It may be better that the film and book differ. So personally - watching before reading has worked well for me.

I'll let you know in a week when I watch it in theaters. I just read the book and loved it! Looking forward to reading the other two but the 2nd and 3rd have nothing to do with the film. My guess is you'll understand the story a bit better if you read the book, but the ending of the film is probably going to be different from the books.

After. You'll get use to the world through the movie, and you'll find some answers in the book. Worked for me.

I read City of Saints and Madmen first. It makes this book read like a kid's Dick & Jane. I wanted to read more from the author when I heard about the film adaptation. So I took the opportunity to read the book then saw the movie two days after finishing it.
You've probably already made your decision by now but I'd suggest to others with the same question to see the movie first, and if you liked it read the book. The heart and soul of the book made it to the movie but if you are interested in its mind, go check out the book.
