Definitely a mercy killing. The mob would have tortured Richie and handed him a slow, agonizing death as they did Blue. I think that Pop was anguished for the rest of his life for being rewarded for "catching" Richie. Interesting though, to ponder that he probably couldn't have helped Mam to a quicker death. That's how tortured he was by what he did years earlier. She knew, and that's why she asked Leonie to help her.

Great question. From what we were given, especially about Pop, I would say it was a mercy killing. I thought it was a odd that he was alone with Richie long enough to kill him, hold him while he bled out and let the dogs tear him apart. There was a mob of a hundred, just seems like a discrepancy.

Pop knew what the mob would do to Richie so he killed Richie himself out of mercy and, I think, paternal love.

I think he let the dogs on Richie to avoid the suspicion of him killing Richie. I'am guessing the mob would have been angrier at Pop for taking away the chance of "avenging" their people. Pop being a black man that too working in Parchman. By letting the dogs have him, he would not have to face the mob's wrath.

But then why did he set the dogs on Richie? They tore his neck to pieces.
