MAJOR SPOILER: Do you think Pop killed Richie as a mercy, or to get in the good graces of the prison higher-ups? Wanting to like Pop leads me to believe the former, and he says something about how we give animals better deaths than the lynch mob was giving Blue. But Pop does benefit from killing Richie, and I personally wasn't convinced Richie couldn't have kept running while the mob was distracted. Thoughts?

I'am guessing the mob would have been angrier at Pop for taking away the chance of "avenging" their people. Pop being a black man that too working in Parchman. By letting the dogs have him, he would not have to face the mob's wrath. (less)
