Starrisa asked:

Is it absolutely necessary to read this book before Oathbringer? (Like if I don't read this will I still be able to understand the stuff going on in Oathbringer?) Thanks!! I'm just not exactly a fan of Lift...sorry! :(

Justin Ottinger I would not say that it is absolutely necessary, although I would like to point out that I went from not really caring about Lift to actually liking her after reading this book. Lift and (SPOILER!) Nale (/SPOILER!) both go through some important character development in this book, and are featured more prominently in the main plotline of the series starting with Oathbringer. As long as you're fine with missing out on that, feel free to skip Edgedancer or save it until after Oatbringer. It also makes one of Oathbringer's interludes make quite a bit more sense--but then again, that interlude is pretty mysterious even after you read Edgedancer. To say more would be a spoiler.
Amanda I read Oathbringer first. While not having read Edgedancer did not hinder my enjoyment of Book 3, I would recommend reading Edgedancer first. It contains information that is helpful to know (specifically in one of the battles); not just about Lift, but Darkness as well.
Brenda Mr Sanderson himself recommends reading Edgedancer first, in his acknowledgement section of Oathbringer. Yes, I read those... In fact, he *strongly* recommends. Hey, when the author gives a suggestion, he knows the information will be important down the road.

Like Justin, Lift is far from one of my favorite characters, but she actually does start growing on you near the end. And Darkness? The discovery of who he is and the whyfor makes the read worth it.
P.S. Patton Yeah man, you'll want to read it, but don't worry—it's a blast to read. This is my favorite Stormlight story so far. The biggest reason you are going to want to read it is for Nale's character arc and storyline. Also, by the end, I garuntee you will understand Lift a lot more. She undergoes a major character arc as well. I think Sanderson's genius in crafting Lift is lost on some people. You really have to read between the lines with her. At any given point, what she is doing—and why—is very different from what she says she is doing—and why. It's fun to watch Wyndle begin to discover this about her as well, and really begin to appreciate Lift.
Maria Rose I read this after reading the 4 big novels of the Stormnight Archive series. I hadn't realized that he had put this out until I got this. The book I got was a limited numbered edition print. Even so, I found this story helped me understand more of the connections between to surge abilities and spren
Kristen Johansen She's a little jerk, but she does grow on one......LOL. I felt the same, though the book flies. It's a fun read.
