I think it was kind of representing that life still isn't fair. Even though all of the characters had lived this far and it seemed they would make it and live "happily ever after," Bardugo wanted to show that life isn't fair; not everyone makes it out in the end. We were kind of coddled by them all surviving Ketterdam and lost sight as to how dangerous everything truly was.

The person to kill him was a young Fjerdan soldier who, like Matthias at one point in his life, was also filled with so much hate for grisha. That boy who killed him represented Matthias' younger self that was ignorant and blind by his military's forced beliefs. So while I hated that it had to be just some random kid that was introduced only a few chapters earlier, I suppose it did make sense in some kind of way. Plus, it was realistic that after everything they endured, not everyone would make it out alive...
